King Mahabali was a kind and generous ruler, and under his reign people lived happily and equally. The Devas grew worried about his power and requested Lord Vishnuโs help. Vishnu appeared as a small Brahmin boy named Vamana and asked Mahabali for three feet of land. When granted, Vamana grew into a gigantic figure, covering the sky with one step and the earth with the second. With no space left, Mahabali offered his own head for the third step, and as a blessing, he was allowed to visit his people once every year, which we celebrate as Onam.
While there are different versions of the Onam legend, this one is the most popular and easiest for children to understand.
